Series 1 of Torchwood aired October 2006-January 2007 in the UK, and it aired on BBC America in the US around October (I think). DVD set is out this month in the US (I think, but am not sure, it's already out in the UK)

Series 2 starts in the UK on January 16 and on BBC America January 26. My guess as to why it's airing so quickly in the US is that BBC America HD is launching, and they don't have as much HD programming to choose from.

The Series 1 DVDs are out now; I've got 'em queued up in Netflix, but I need to watch Season 3 Dr. Who and Season 4 Buffy before I'm ready to tackle those.

Yeah, DVDs were released yesterday.

It does actually occur before DW S3 (although I don't think it matters much before the end of the season, and even then it's not vital).
