The Significance of Blade Runner

"...there aren't many 10-year-old movies that look more prophetic now than they did at the time." - Roger Ebert

It's been argued that Blade Runner might have been the most influential movie made in the last 25 years. The new cut which has been released certainly brings the strengths of the movie to light.

Are you a fan of Blade Runner? Why? Why not?

Just started watching the Final Cut today. My only hangup thus far was the date. It's set it 2019. I think if I were to make this my final word on the project, I would have switched it to "Los Angeles - The Future" or similar. I don't have any trouble settling into the dystopian future, but I'm supposed to believe that it grew out of our own reality in 30 years.

Recognizing it's an alternate reality, dating the setting detracts rather than enhances my viewing experience.

I got the Final Cut in HD for Christmas. I put in my tape version of the directors cut, just to compare. I have to say the HD transfer is better. Some of the scenes are too clear cut, too sharp in HD - but it does hold up fairly well. One very interesting thing they did is take the deleted scenes and string them together as a sort of Bladerunner - the short alternate version movie. I found that I liked that quite a bit too. Almost the whole film is there in the alternate version, just from a different POV and with a voice over that comes and goes. One bit that is better is the shooting of Zora, it was more impactful.

Blade Runner is in my top 3 favorite movies of all time (along with Lawrence of Arabia and The Lion in Winter). I will come back to wax poetic about the movie when I have more time. But to make Kris even more mad at me, here are a couple of photos from the Ultimate Edition...

Bladerunner, easily in my top 5 flicks of all time. I've ordered my super duper special edition, but they keep telling me it's out of stock. I may just have to go out and get the regular 4 disc set to tide me over.
This flick blew me away when I first saw it as a teenager back in the day. I wore out my VHS copy of it twice over. I'm really excited to see the cleaned up, remastered, mumbo-gumbo version.

Blade Runner pretty close to being my favorite movie of all time (neck and neck with Raiders of the Lost Ark). It was the first movie I bought on DVD and was so disappointed. The soundtrack wasn't even in stereo. This newly remastered version looks beautiful and sounds great.
